Video: Porte wins overall, Holmes (26) takes stage on WorldTour debut

Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) has won Tour Down Under overall for the second time in his career.

However, the Australian was denied taking the Willunga Hill final stage by Matthew Holmes, a 26-year-old British rider making his WorldTour debut with Lotto-Soudal.

Holmes, who has ridden with Team Raleigh and then Madison Genesis for the past eight years in Britain, made the large early breakaway today.

And when Porte made his move on the climb to the finish atop Willunga Hill, the Trek-Segafredo man caught all of the escape group as it split to pieces.

However, Holmes was the only one of the early escapees to be able to hold Porte as the Australian pressed all the way to try and gain the time to win overall.

The British rider then played his hand perfectly; sitting on Porte for a short period as he rode for time and then attacking him within sight of the finish to win.

As race leader this morning Daryl Impey (Mitchelston-Scott) faded badly today, Porte looked very strong.

He claimed the overall win by 25 seconds from Diego Ulissi (UAE-Team Emirates) and Simon Geschke (CCC Team).

Sam Bennett, the Irish Deceuninck-QuickStep rider who won stage 2, finished in 103rd place today at 8:53.
