Video: Porte strikes to win, Bennett readies for another chance at victory

Richie Porte claimed the stage today at Tour Down Under and he's now in a great position to win the race overall

Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) has won today's third stage at the Tour Down Under and lifted the leader's jersey from the shoulders of Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal).

After Sam Bennett and Ewan had won stage 1 and stage 2 respectively it was the turn of the climbers in the field today to make their move on the finishing climb of Torrens Hill Road into Paracombe.

Porte was best on that incline after attacking it early and opening a gap on his rivals, though a group of eight other favourites was just five seconds back.

And in that group was Daryl Impey, the Mitchelton-Scott rider who has won the race overall for the past two years.

Bennett in the leader's jersey he won on stage 1 but lost yesterday. He didn't feature today but tomorrow looks like another chance for the sprinters

Rob Power (Team Sunweb) was 2nd today and Simon Yates, Impey's team mate, was 3rd despite falling heavily yesterday.

Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-QuickStep) did not feature today on the climbers' finish, opting instead to ride in to the finish. He finished in good shape, 5:26 down on Porte.

The Irish rider should have a chance as soon as tomorrow to try for another win as the 152.8km stage 4 into Murray Bridge should suit the fast men, though there are a few small climbs along the way.

Porte now leads the race overall by six seconds from Impey, meaning the title holder from South Africa is still very much in the hunt, with Power 3rd at 9 seconds.

However, the final stage on Sunday finishes on Willunga Hill and combined with today's climb that should result in time gaps that any sprint bonuses picked up by Impey will be unable to make up.
