Dan Martin crosses the finish line punching the air at the ski station finish, with Alberto Contador just behind.
Here’s a great highlights clip of Dan Martin’s brilliant stage 3 win at the La Molina summit on Volta a Catalunya on Wednesday.
The attacking from the select group began with 2km remaining to the ski station finish, with most of the big names still in contention having a go.
They included Richie Porte (BMC), Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Alberto Contador (Tinkoff), though the big guns neutralised each other after Team Sky’s shift on the front was over.
But when Quintana attacked for a second time on the final section of the climb inside the last kilometre, it was Etixx-QuickStep’s Martin who sprang after him.
The Irishman looked in monster form; quickly catching the Colombian climbing ace and blasting past him.
Tejay Van Garderen of BMC led the chase after Martin with Contador in his slipstream.
And while the American held Martin at a few bike lengths for around 200 metres before Contador took over, Martin was far too strong and powered his way to win and take the race lead.
