Ireland’s Caroline Ryan put in a massive performance at the World Track Championships in Cali, Colombia, in the early hours of this morning, almost coming away with a medal in the women's scratch race.
She got clear in a two-rider move in a frenetic finale but while her breakaway companion hung on to lift the world title, Ryan faded in the last couple of laps and was swallowed up by the bunch within touching distance of the finish line.
She was oh so close to adding a silver medal to the bronze she won at the Worlds points race in Melbourne two years ago.

For the uninitiated; a scratch race is the most simple of all track races. The 10km event - 40 laps of the track - sees all of the riders start in a bunch, with the first three across the line winning the medals.
