Just as the group was being caught, Eddie Dunbar hit the afterburners for a second time. He would crest the climb out front. A  regrouping of sorts then took place at the front, leaving an 18-man breakaway clear to gain almost four minutes.

Here’s a fantastic clip featuring Eddie Dunbar stamping his authority all over the Marco Pantani Memorial in Italy today.

In the first clip below, jump forward to eight minutes into the video (with 41:30 remaining) and you’ll see the period of attacking featuring Dunbar.

The action really starts on the third of three passages of the Montevecchio climb; some 4.3km in length at seven per cent.

It is Nairo Quintana (Movistar) who shakes things up first with a big attack. But Dunbar goes after him and sits behind him for a moment.

Despite late attack, it came down to a sprint from the breakaway; Eddie Dunbar claiming 8th after a brilliant ride.

Quintana flicks his elbow to get Dunbar to come around him, at which point the group numbers just five riders.

And when Eddie Dunbar then hits the front the damage is clear. Later, when others are getting across to them, Dunbar attacks.

He goes clear and eventually crests the climb with Israel Cycling Academy rider Ben Hermans, with a regrouping taking place.

After a period 18 riders gather to form the breakaway; Eddie Dunbar the only Team Sky rider in the escape.

Davide Ballerini (Androni-Sidermec) wins in a sprint from the group. David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) was 2nd, with Ballerini’s team mate Francesco Gavazzi in 3rd.

Irish rider Dunbar took 8th place. But his effectively teaming up with Quintana to do the damage on the climb is special and well worth a look.
