After the drama of yesterday evening, when Giro stage 1 winner and race leader Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) was disqualified, the woman who took the maglia rosa from her, Elisa Balsamo (Lidl Trek), has won stage 2.

Ireland's Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ) has taken 2nd place, her second runner-up position in two days in a bunch sprint into Carole.

Wicklow’s Gillespie edged out 3rd-place finisher Chiara Consonni (Canyon/Sram), with a photo finish adjudication needed to separate them.

The Irish woman was led out by her team in the closing stages and went early in the sprint; the first of the fast riders to pull the trigger.

However, former world champion Balsamo was able to pass, in what was a closer finish compared to yesterday.

Gillespie was wearing the red points classification leader's jersey today, as the leader of that classification, Balsamo, was in pink.

Today's stage result, with time bonuses in play at the finish, means Gillespie remains 2nd overall, just eight seconds down on Balsamo, with Consonni in 3rd at 12 seconds.

More to come.
