Irish road and track international Emma Jeffers (Liv AlUla Jayco Women's Continental Team) has added another fine result to her growing palmares, with a very strong finish at Ronde de Mouscron (1.1) in Belgium today.
At the end of three hours of racing - 125km over four laps of a circuit in Mouscron - Jeffers had powered her way to the front, aided by a team lead-out, in a bid to add to the UCI-ranked European wins she has taken over the past two years.
And while the podium eluded her today, she took 5th place from a start list that included World Tour teams like Lidl-Trek and Uno X-Mobility.
Clara Copponi (Lidl-Trek), a former European champion on the track, produced a powerful final gallop to win in style. Norway's former national road race champion, Susanne Andersen (Uno-X Mobility) was 2nd, with Alicia González (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93) rounding out the podium.
Jeffers took 5th after perhaps becoming slightly detached from her two team mates on lead-out duties today. However, she still had the legs to take up the sprint from a long way out and looked one of the fastest all the way to the line.
She started her effort a little too far back to threaten for victory today. However, Copponi won it well, with a lead-out that dropped her off at the very front.
Still, Jeffers put in an excellent kick for the line and with a little more luck in the final jockeying for position at the end, she would have made the podium.
Though she is still just 21-years-old, she won stages last year at Memorial Michela Fanini (2.2) and Giro Mediterraneo in Rosa (2.2), where she also won the points classification. And the sprint she produced today should carry her to victory, perhaps more than once, in the months ahead.
