David Montgomery demonstrating again that he's not just an off-road strongman; taking a clear win on this morning's stage 2 of the Newry Three Day (Photo: Amy Norah Farrell)
Having shown his cards in storming to a great win by four minutes at the Madigan Grand Prix in Lurgan last weekend, David Montgomery has been at it again; this time during the morning road stage at the Newry Three Day today, Saturday.
The U23 national cyclocross champion was out on front alone after 53 miles on the lumpy Hilltown circuit.
While delighted to take the stage at the head of an 80-man field containing some very strong riders, he also took the leader’s yellow jersey from stage 1 winner Gavin Magowan (Dromara).
Montgomery’s 10th place in the bunch finish that settled the opener on Friday evening, saw him go into this morning’s road stage on the same time as the yellow jersey.
The field was due to face a time trial this afternoon of 3.7miles.
Unfortunately, at the time of writing we had no results from this morning’s stage 2, but the highlights video below is well worth a look.
We’ll bring you the stage and classification results for stage 2 later and indeed all the news for stage 3.
