Dan Martin and Eddie Dunbar both saw
their potentially race-winning positions disappear in Italy today when they
went the wrong way.
The two Irish riders had pulled clear in
a really strong large breakaway in the 198km Tre Valli Varesine (1.HC).
Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) had gone solo
from the front group but was being pegged back when the drama unfolded.
And just behind the group of Dunbar and
Martin, the remains of the peloton was almost 30 seconds back, though not out
of the race.
However, the outcome was shaped when the
group the two Irish men were with went the wrong way with about 15km remaining.
David Formolo (Bora-hansgrohe) was at
the front when he followed a race moto off course.
Everyone else in the group rode after
them, at speed. It took them a while to realise they were off course and by the
time they did and turned back their race was over.
The remains of the peloton had passed
them and went on to catch Sanchez in the final kilometre.
Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visa) attacked soon
after the Spaniard was caught and took a solo win by three seconds.
Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) trailed home more than seven minutes down in 61st place and Eddie Dunbar (Team Ineos) was a non-finisher.
There were also a few other dicey moments, including Sanchez having to bunny hop a traffic island when the car and moto ahead almost completely blocked his way, second video below.
