Peter Sagan uses the elbow and Mark Cavendish is sent crashing onto the tarmac in the sprint.
Cavendish Sagan Tour de France sprint crash
Arnaud Demare (FDJ) has won stage 4 of the Tour de France in Vittel, but Mark Cavendish and Peter Sagan were the talking point.
Britons Cavendish (Dimension Data) and Ben Swift (Team UAE) came down at full speed after Sagan used his elbow in the sprint.
Cavendish ploughed into the steel crowd control barriers and he’ll be lucky if he continues in the race.
And while Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) has won many fans for his bike handling, his physicality in this sprint has come into question.
He used his right elbow, apparently to prevent Cavendish coming up his inside and past him.
But all he succeeded in doing was shunting Cavendish right into to barriers. And the sprinters just behind the Manxman had nowhere to go.
Sagan said afterwards he did not know Cavendish was behind him and had apologised to him.
More to follow.
