The final minutes of action on today's stage 3 of Vuelta a Burgos
Rarely has a pro cyclist been as hyped as Remco Evenepoel but the 20-year-old has lived up to his growing reputation again today at Vuelta a Burgos; winning the stage and taking the race lead.
After a very aggressive final hour, during which the field split in crosswinds and the final climb was raced very hard, Evenepoel was among the select group as the summit finish neared atop Picón Blanco.
With 2km remaining the young Belgian stayed seated and simply pressed harder on the pedals to ride away from those he was with, which included Mikel Landa (Bahrain McLaren), Richard Carapaz (Team Ineos), George Bennett (Jumbo Visma) and Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott).
He pressed hard for the line as the group he dropped split to pieces; taking the stage win by 18 seconds from Bennett.
Landa was 3rd at 32 seconds, Chaves 4th at 35 seconds and Evenepoel's 21-year-old Deceuninck-QuickStep João Almeida in 5th place at 45 seconds.
Overnight leader, and stage 1 winner, Felix Großschartner (Bora-hansgrohe) was dropped on the climb meaning Evenepoel also took the race lead.
Others to lose time unexpectedly included Ireland's Eddie Dunbar and his Team Ineos team mate, and race winner of the last two years, Ivan Sosa.
More to come.
