Sam Bennett’s hopes of sprinting for the first one-day WorldTour
win of his career at the Cadel Evans Road Race may not have come to pass but
the Irish rider still rode well.
The race split to pieces as some teams, including Team Ineos,
tried to make it as hard as possible to get rid of the sprinters.
Ireland’s Bennett finished 1:33 down on the winner; his Deceuninck-Quickstep’s
team mate Dries Devenyns.
With about 1½ laps to go of the undulating 16.6km finishing
circuit remaining, a group of 17 riders pulled clear.
Bennett missed that move but the winning scenario would come
from it; Devenyns and Pavel Sivakov (Team Ineos) pulling clear in the closing
stages.
Devenyns beat the young Russian to the line, with the
strongest men from the 17-rider group just seconds behind the lead duo.
Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) claimed 3rd just
four seconds down on the winner and runner-up.
Jens Keukeleire (EF Pro Cycling) was 4th on the
same time as Impey with Dylan van Baarle (Team Ineos) in 5th and Jay McCarthy (Bora-Hansgrohe)
finishing 6th.
Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) was best of the sprinters, finishing in 7th place some 25 seconds down on the winner and in the small group as Elia Viviani (Cofidis) and Simon Yates (Mitchelton Scott).
