Riding in the colours of their native Northern Ireland against some of the best time trial riders in the world, Marcus Christie and Michael Hutchinson have put in very strong performances at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this afternoon.

Hutchinson was 12th and Christie 13th in a field that included world class opposition.

The 38.4km time trial was won by former British champion and Giro time trial stage winner last year Alex Dowsett.

The Englishman was left out of the Movistar team for the Tour de France after falling ill before the race and not recovering in time.

As a result, he said pre race he was fired up for the time trial and would regard anything less than the gold medal as a failure.

He was true to his word today, charging around the course in a time of 47mins 42secs, just seven seconds faster than runner-up and top Australian rider Rohan Dennis.

No stranger to winning medals at major meetings, including Olympic gold on the track, it was left to Geraint Thomas of Wales to round out the podium; the Team Sky man coming out of the Tour obviously with some good legs. He was 14 seconds off winner Dowsett.

Hutchinson relinquished 4:24 to the winner, while Christie was just 11 seconds further. Most of those who finished ahead of the Northern Irish men are big names on the world stage - see full result below.
