Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Fenix) has taken victory after nail-biting finish at the Tour of Flanders when he and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) were caught by two chasers on the finishing straight.
As Van der Poel and Pogačar came to the finish for an expected two-up sprint, they slowed down so much that two of the men they had been with in the breakaway - Dylan van Baarle (Ineos Grenadiers) and Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) - caught them.
Van der Poel persisted with his sprint, from the front of the group and won, but Pogačar was overtaken and then boxed in by Van Baarle and Madouas. The Tour de France champion was so frustrated at seeing his chance slip away that he pushed Van Baarle a little and then threw both his arms in the air in frustration.
In the end he missed out on even taking a place on the podium - despite being the strongest and most aggressive in the race over the last 60km. Instead, Van der Poel won by Van Baarle and Madouas.
