The international men's cyclocross season may have simmered along in its early months as it waited for the three big stars to start competing, but it has now exploded into 'epic battle mode'.
At the end of Exact Cross Loenhout-Azencross today, Friday, it was again Wout Van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel and Tim Pidcock fighting it out at the front.
In a cagey sprint finish befitting a major classic, Van Aert (Jumbo Visma) took the honours from Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and world champion Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers). It was Van Aert's fifth win of the season - including his Dublin World Cup victory three weeks ago.
The Belgian champion also won out in a similar circumstances - after another all-time classic scrap - at the night race in Diegem on Wednesday, where Pidcock was 2nd and Van der Poel filled the final step on the podium.
