Cycling Ireland has announced the line-up for two U16 Irish teams that will take on the Youth Tour of Scotland in mid April. The teams are named before the 2022 season gets underway as they are based on the results of the Youth National Road Championships in Co Wexford last August.
A team of four girls and another of four boys will represent Ireland in the separate boys and girls editions of the Youth Tour of Scotland from April 1st to 4th.
The girls Irish team is comprised of Aine Doherty (VC Glendale), Mia Smith (Waterford Racing), Zoe Lindsay (TC Racing) and Lucy Brown (Phoenix CC). The U16 boys Irish team is made up of Sam Coleman (Shelbourne Orchard CC), Seth Dunwoody (Shelbourne Orchard CC), Stephen Sheehan (O’Leary Stone Kanturk) and Willem O Connor (O’Leary Stone Kanturk).
Two reserves have been named; Josh Callaly (Navan RC) for the boys team and Hannah Hayes (TC Racing) for the girls.
The teams have been selected by the Cycling Ireland Youth Commission for the races which take place in Pertshire, where the Irish riders will battle with some of the best youth cyclists in Britain.
Though the criteria stipulated selection was based on last year’s nationals results – with the top four in the races last August selected for Scotland - an expression of interest process was still run, with 46 youth riders replying to it.
As a large number of races and development opportunities are planned for youth riders this year, the expression of interest process acted as an opportunity for riders to signal their ambitions for the coming season.
