With no shortage of strong talent in the junior and U23 ranks, competition for places on national teams is more intense than ever.
There really is great strength in depth now, with the general cycling boom and some of the structures for emerging young riders combining to throw up more and more Irish hopefuls.
Yesterday two of that group – Ryan Reilly and Matt Teggart – took a very impressive 1-2 in a tough race in France.
Both riding for AC Bisontine, with whom Dubliner Philip Lavery did so well a few years ago; Teggart and Reilly got clear in a large breakaway at the GP de Coanus in the Vosges area of France.

And as the breakaway began attacking each other, the Irish team mates worked really well together, pulling clear at the head of affairs to ride into the finish for victory and the runner-up slot.
It was Reilly who took the win after almost 3½ hours of racing, with Teggart also giving the victory salute to celebrate a job well done by both as they pulled out a gap of 1:41 on the next rider home.
Teggart has just come out of the An Post Rás where he rode on the Irish team and is clearly going very well for it, with Reilly in equally strong form.
