Cal Tutty (University College Cork-Velo Performance Racing Team) and Elena Wallace (Ulster University-Harps CC) took the first national titles on offer on the road in the 2026 season when they triumphed at the Intervarsity Championships.
Tutty and Wallace both took flight in the day's winning breakaways, with Tutty getting away on his own in the latter stages of the men's race. Wallace, who has been one of the strong emerging riders on the domestic scene in recent years, was locked into a more tactical battle in the women's race, before winning the day.
She had gone clear with international rider Abi Conway (University Limerick-Paralloy RT) and they dominated the race from the front, over five laps of the 7.5km course in Kilteely, Co Limerick.
However, though Conway made repeated efforts to shake off Wallace in the University of Limerick promotion, Wallace answered the questions asked of her.
At the finish, Wallace got the better of Conway to win the Irish title, with Veronika Krolova (University Limerick-Greenmount Cycling Academy) best of the rest, taking the bronze.
In the men's race, eventual winner Tutty formed a three-man move with Sean Lundy (University College Dublin-UCD Cycling Club) and Arnaud Dumoulin (O'Leary Stone Kanturk-University College Cork).
Tutty did it the hard way, missing the initial breakaway of Lundy and Dumoulin, though he blasted across to the leading duo to make it three up front.
While there were plenty of attacks from the chasing pack, none of the groups got across to the three leaders; eventually trimmed back to two, when Lundy and Tutty pressed on.
On the last climb on the course, Tutty sent it with a big move, gapping Lundy and riding in solo to win. Lundy took a deserved silver medal before three UCC riders sprinted it out for the bronze.
In that chasing group, Patrick O'Loughlin was fastest to the line, taking the final media, from team mate James O’Shea (UCC) with Eoin Kelly (UCD) 5th and Jared Tritschler (UL) in 6th.
