Trevor Woods came away from Enniscrone, Co Sligo, today an Irish champion; the Strata 3-Velorevolution rider claiming gold in the Masters 50 event.
In a muddy National Cyclocross Championships, promoted by Ballina CC, the riders ran for long sections of the course as mud made it impossible to ride through in places.
Woods got to the front of the field during the first lap and from there pressed on to build a lead and win solo.
He claimed the title from two prolific and experienced campaigners; Des Woods of Newry Wheelers in 2nd and John Doris of EPIC MTB taking the bronze.
The new champion is an experienced triathlete and said his running background really came into play today.

“It went really well, I had a good race. The conditions suited me today," said a delighted Woods after his gold medal ride.
"There was a big focus on running and I’ve been a runner for a lot of my life. I’ve partaken in triathlon.
"I had good current run fitness and I knew that was going to stand to me today.
“So it went well; I think I took the lead at the end of
the first lap into the second lap and I gradually extended that as the race
went on.”
However, Woods added while the amount of running required on the muddy course was good for him, cyclocross in the conditions of today's race made for heavy going.
“It’s a different type of running; I run 5k or 10k, but this is different to that. This is really heavy cross country running," he explained.
“And you’re carrying your bike and pushing your bike, so
it is a different type of running. But, definitely, having good run fitness
would stand to you on this sort of course.”
