Breandán Flannagan (17) is having something of a breakthrough weekend at the Tour of the North. And Darnell Moore is again showing his status as one of Ireland's top elite riders. However, while both rode very well in this morning's TT it was Spirit Tifosi's Graham and Burnett who won the day (All photos by Toby Watson)

Darnell Moore, Breandán Flannagan go close at Tour of the North

Top ranked A1 rider in the country Darnell Moore and one of our best juniors Breandán Flannagan have gone close to a stage win at the Tour of the North.

However, as was the case on the opening stage yesterday; it was the British riders on top in this morning’s race against the clock.

Marcus Burnett (Spirit Tifosi) wore the yellow jersey into this morning’s 7.72km stage in Galgorm, Ballymena.

He claimed victory in yesterday’s opener after getting clear of the decisive breakaway of the day with Jack Stanton (Pro Vision).

Burnett was forced to settle for 2nd place in the TT this morning, with team mate Rupert Graham winning in a time of 11:06.

Burnett was just one second off that pace. Then came Irish riders Moore and the very impressive Flannagan.

Race leader Burnett, Moore and Delaney in time trial action this morning.

Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles) was just eight seconds slower than the winner. And Breandán Flannagan (PowerHouse Sport) was 12 seconds back.

Next in line was Jordan Peacock (Spirit Tifosi), some 16 seconds down. Just behind him, in 6th place, was yesterday’s runner-up Stanton.

Lindsay Watson of PowerHouse Sport, who made the chase group yesterday, was 7th some 19 seconds off the winning time.

Zeb Kyffin (KD Gas) finished just six tenths of a second slower than Watson.

Rounding out the top 10 today came Cian Delaney and Craig McAuley. The Stamullen RC and Caldwell Cycles riders were 26 and 27 seconds down on the victor.

The result means that going into this afternoon’s stage Burnett still leads overall from Stanton. But he has extended that lead from one second to 16 seconds.

In third place overall is U23 rider Moore, some 25 seconds down. Next comes Watson at 36 seconds followed by Delaney at 43 seconds, Graham at 56 seconds and Flannagan at 1:08.

The only other Irish rider in the top ten is Craig McAuley (Caldwell Cycles) in 10th at 1:23.

This afternoon the riders face a 65 mile circuit race that takes in five laps of the Roguery circuit.

We'll have full results of the TT for you when we have them ourselves.
