Tough day in the saddle for Deignan and Roche in California TT

Philip Deignan and Nicolas Roche have endured a day to forget on stage 5 of the Tour of California, both losing time in the 29.7km individual time trial.

Roche was 57th in the tough test in Bakersfield, losing 3:37 to winner David Zabriskie, the US TT champion who rides for Gamin Barracuda.

Deignan was a little further back, finishing in 66th place and relinquishing 4:08 to the flying American.

Zabriskie has moved into the GC lead, taking the yellow jersey off the shoulders of the winner of the first four stages Peter Sagan. The Slovak Liquigas-Cannondale rider could only manage 52nd on the day, losing 3:27.

Yesterday’s TT result puts Roche in 38th on GC, 3:37 down on the leader. Deignan is 46th,4:08 down.

The riders now face two stages in the montains today (Friday) and tomorrow before the race finishes on Sunday with a crit in LA.

Today’s stage (unfolding this evening, Irish time) takes in 186km with four categorised climbs.
