Matthew Devins has won the Armagh City Road Race this morning; one of Ireland's top junior proving best in the A3 race.
The victory, the teenager's fifth of the season, comes one week after he triumphed at the Keevan CC Open Race last weekend.
Today the Yeats Country CC man initially
missed what looked like a very decent early breakaway, which gained more than
two minutes at one point.
However, Devins was in the thick of the
efforts to get a chase organised back in the peloton. And once riders began to
roll through those out front were gradually reeled in.
The racing came back together with one
lap remaining as the last of the escapees was recaptured heading out on the
final lap.
Soon after that final circuit began the
move that would prove to be the winning of the race began to unfold.
Richard McCavana (Phoenix CC) and Alan Mackey (Rossbury Racing) got clear of the bunch in what looked like a decisive move from the outset.
Eventual winner
Devins was once again left in the bunch, though he did not wait for the
situation to get out of his reach.
After McCavana and Mackey established what looked like a healthy lead, Devins saw his chance and took flight from the bunch solo in pursuit of the two leaders.
He kicked hard over the top of a drag
and put the head down until he had joined the leading duo.
From that point the leaders worked well
together before some inevitable cat and mouse kicked in as the finish neared.
McCavana led out the sprint but Devins waited until the last moment to kick; hitting out hard with less than 200 metres to the line and winning it well.
Phoenix’s McCavana was 2nd on the day followed by Rossbury’s Mackey. Colm O’Neill of Orwell Wheelers was best of the rest in 4th place.
