Ronan Killeen has won the main event at ‘Round 2’ of the Mondello Series in Co Kildare this evening. The Lucan CRC rider proved strongest from the breakaway after an impressive performance by his club, with three riders in the top 10.

Killeen had time to celebrate his victory a few lengths ahead of Leo Doyle (TWC TEMPO Veldhoven) and Jason Kenny (UCD Cycling Club), who fought a tight sprint for 2nd place, with Doyle having the edge.

The eventual winner was one of a number of A1 riders on the move early in the handicapped A1-A2-A3-Junior race when the scratch group split and about eight of them rode clear in pursuit of the bunches ahead.

That A1 move gradually caught all the riders ahead and shortly after getting to the front of the race, with about three laps to go, the winning breakaway got clear.

In that move were Lucan CRC team mates Andy Keogh, Eugene Murtagh and Killeen. They were with Jason Kenny (UCD Cycling Club), last week’s winner Ryan Geraghty (Spin11–Chain Reaction Racing Team), and emerging junior rider, and last year’s Irish U16 road race champion, Hayden Power (Comeragh CC)

Killeen then attacked on the final lap and got a gap, powering clear to victory after holding off Doyle and Kenney just behind him. Murtagh came through for 4th place with Geraghty 5th, young Power 6th, Rhys Kenny (UCD Cycling Club) 7th and Javan Nulty (Stamullen RC) in 8th place. Gabriele Glodenyte (UCD Cycling Club) was best woman.

The A4 race was won by last week's opening round winner Cian Bailey (Unattached Leinster) from Eamon Kirwan (Kildare Cycling Club) and Kevin Hanafin (VC Beechwood).
