The sandpit that caused absolute chaos in Glencullen at the weekend

Paul Norton has been at this cyclo-cross craic for four years now but he can scarcely recall an epic fail such as this one. The Dubliner, who owns the Bike Hub in Howth, said he didn't get his line right entering the sand and this was the outcome! (Chapeaux to Sean Rowe for the shot)

Paul Norton has been around the cyclo-cross scene a while now but not even a man of his experience could prevent an epic ‘head over heels’ in Sunday’s Fixx Supercross Cup at Glencullen golf course.

The Strata3-VeloRevolution rider was competing in the ‘A’ race when he came a cropper a couple of laps into the seven-lap affair.

The sandpit/bunker that claimed him would take down many more before the day was out.

But Norton’s nosedive was the talk of the clubhouse after – and we salute the superb Sean Rowe for capturing the moment it all went wrong.

“The bunker was five or six inches deep,” Norton said by way of a fairly acceptable excuse.

“You really had to pick your line carefully and roll down into it…

“It wasn’t the speed that caught people out, you really just had to find a rut.

“I was trying to get my front wheel into a rut but I missed it, the front wheel into the sand and that was that.”

Norton was up again in no time and rode on to finish 40th.

“It wasn’t painful at all, it was fine – but I shouldered the bike the rest of the time through it!”

Here are a few more of Sean Rowe's shots from the weekend...

The sandpit - which is usually a bunker on the golf course in Glencullen - proved an absolute nightmare for the riders in last Sunday's Fixx Supercross Cup.

We're not sure whether this rider fell or is just dreaming he's on a beach in the south of Spain!

Some riders just swallowed their pride and dismounted before entering the sandpit . A good choice, we think.

He was almost out but that steep lip looks very, very tricky indeed.

Another one bites the dust!

That steep lip and deep sand took down many, many men.

Look how deep that sand is! (and how fed up with it all the rider in question looks!)

Careful now! These two had the hard part done before they tangled on the way out!
