Primož Roglič (Jumbo Visma) may have won the mountain TT and also taken the maglia rosa on Giro d'Italia today, though it was anything but a smooth ride. He hit a ridge in the road on the steep climb to the line on Monte Lussari and, as his team looked on at the TV footage in the finish area, he struggled to get going again on the steep gradient.
However, after getting his chain back on, he got a strong push from his mechanic - following on a motorbike - and a fan by the roadside and resumed his effort.
His team's reaction soon went from despair to elation as Roglič flew up the mountain just as race leader Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) began to struggle behind him, with only 26 seconds of a buffer on Roglič setting out this morning.
In the end, Roglič won the stage by 40 seconds from Thomas, ensuring he leads by 14 seconds - and is now certain of overall victory barring disaster (another one) - on the streets of Rome tomorrow.
