David McCann (RTS Racing Team) had a good ride on the fourth stage of the Tour of Oman today, being left in a group just behind André Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) after the last climb only for the German to somehow get back on and win the stage.
“The bodies where scattered everywhere over the last climb and I was just behind Greipel's little group,” McCann told stickybottle.
“It was a fantastic ride by him to get back on and win the stage.”
McCann said with temperatures nearing 40 degrees, he regretted his choice of race wear immediately the stage started.
“It maybe wasn’t the day to try out the new skin suit. When I checked the SRM, we had one
medium length climb today around 12 minutes which I rolled over at 414 watts, but at 38.8 degrees. I was cooking!”
“It was a tough run-in and a hilly circuit today. They weren’t incredible hills, but as the heat took its toll, every hill looked steeper and the paranoid-puncture got worse and worse. I finished pretty well done; happy to have gotten a proper hard stage in the bank.”
McCann eventually came home in a group 1:33 down on a day when the race split to pieces leaving some riders more than twenty minutes in arrears.
Greipel was enjoying his fifth win of the season today and also leads on general classification in Oman. The race concludes on Sunday following two more road stages, with tomorrow’s 158km jaunt finishing atop the back-breaking Green Mountain.
