Ireland's Matt Teggart lines up alongside Thibaut Pinot at the start of the d’Ouverture La Marseillaise (UC 1.1) in France.
Coming into the An Post-Chainreaction team over the winter after a really strong season in France and in the green of Ireland last year, Matt Teggart has posted a promising opening race of 2017 today.
The 20-year-old former Banbridge CC man was the sole Irishman named in his team’s line-up for the d’Ouverture La Marseillaise (UC 1.1).
And at the end of a testing 152km of hostilities he finished in one of the first groups.
The race was won by FDJ’s Arthur Vichot who was best in the nine-man finish after the cold weather and lumpy course split the field up more than usual.
He took victory ahead of Maxime Bouet (Fortuneo-Vital Concept), with another Frenchman Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie) claiming the last spot on the podium.
Just over 20 seconds down on the leading group of nine was a chase group of 15.
And Teggart was in the next group on the road, some 4:01 down on the winner in 40th place.
However, on a day when most of the field was over 10 minutes back, it was a very promising first shift at this level by Teggart.
Best of the An Post-ChainReaction team on the day was new Canadian signing Sean McKinnon.
He came home in 31st and was in a group 50 seconds of Teggart’s.
