Matthew Teggart (WiV SunGod) has taken victory at the National Road Series on an uncharacteristically sunny day in Knockaderry, Limerick. The 26-year-old, who blazed ahead in the final stages with a determined sprint, said it was a much tougher race than his first series victory in Carlow.
"The EvoPro guys had a lot of numbers here, six or seven guys in the race, so that made it difficult and I was very marked out early on," he said, shortly after the race.
But the win places Teggart in a commanding position early in the season, with the two NRS events so far won in stellar fashion by the ambitious Banbridge rider.
Coming up behind Teggart in second, third and fourth place was Conn McDunphy (EvoPro Racing), Gareth O'Neill (Caldwell Cycles) and Mark Dowling (All human-VeloRevolution) who followed in a chasing trio after his surgical solo attack, with Daire Feeley coming in fifth.
The progress of an early breakaway group of five or six riders was slowly chipped away at as another group, containing Teggart, made their advance. After Daire Feeley in the leading group suffered a puncture which knocked him off kilter, there was a major battle between him and Teggart, as he charged ahead in the last few kilometres.
Feeley would have been a top favourite for this race, having been placed as the top ranked A1 rider in the country last year, so this unlucky mishap will come as a major disappointment for him.
