Kate Richardson, a 19-year-old up and comer from Scotland, takes the win on The Cut

After finishing 2nd on the opening two stages of Rás na mBan, Scottish rider Kate Richardson hit the jackpot on the tough finish of The Cut at the end of today’s stage 3 in Co Kilkenny.

The 19-year-old Alba Development Road Team rider pulled clear in the finale as part of a five-rider lead group before beating her rivals in the sprint to the finish line atop the climb. Team LDN–Brother UK’s Alex Morrice was 2nd with 3rd place taken by and Cams-Basso’s Becky Storrie

However, yesterday’s stage winner and overall leader - Lieke van Zeelst of Greenmount CA – was in that front group and so still leads the race at the halfway point, with a five second advantage over Richardson, who is looking in mint condition.

Best Irish finisher today was Kelly Murphy of Team Ireland; the track pursuit specialist finding her road legs in another wet day for racing and placing 12th. She was part of a nine-rider chasing group at 19 seconds.

The winner of stage 1, Lara Gillespie (Team Ireland) finished in 15th place at 43 seconds while Fiona Mangan (IBCT) was 19th at 1:09.

Even before the riders hit the 8.6km climb of Wolftrap today there was plenty if aggression, with Ireland’s Murphy and Svenja Betz (IBCT) off the front and trying to get clear. Behind them, the Cams-Basso and Pro-Noctus–Rotor–Redchilli Bikes teams led the chase and closed them down.

By the time the main field got up the climb, in very wet and misty conditions, it was down to about 25 riders. There followed the descent before the road kicked up again towards the finish on The Cut, where the riders who filled the top five stages rode away at the end of the stage from Portlaoise into the Slieve Blooms.

Cycling Ulster’s Amelia Tyler retained the Kilkenny County Council Best Irish Rider jersey despite a crash before Wolftrap. Richardson retains the points classification lead and Danni Shrosbree (Cams-Basso) remains in the climbers jersey ahead of stage 4 tomorrow from Kilkenny City to Piltown.
