Riding his first senior world championships, Mullen got off to a slower start in the 4km event than Kiwi opponent Marc Ryan but fought gamely to pull the deficit back from 1.7 seconds to within a tenth of a second with just four laps of the track to go.

That was as close as the 19-year-old would get to the New Zealander however as Mullen began to fade in the last 500m to finish fourth overall, covering the four kilometre test in a time of 4.24.626

Having put in such an excellent ride on his first senior championships Mullen has shown the world that he will be a star on the track for many years to come.
