The Irish team dodged a bullet at the Tour de l'Avenir today after general classification favourite, Paul Seixas, and his French team mates went on the attack and managed to building a large advantage at one point.
However, the day ended on a positive note, with Seth Dunwoody taking the first podium finish of the race for Ireland, in what is his debut appearance. Man of the match was stage winner Carl-Frederik Bévort (Denmark), who put in an epic peformance on his way to victory.
The 21-year-old made the first breakaway of the day and then also got into the second move, going solo from it from a long way out and proving too strong for the flying peloton to close down.
At the end of 159km of racing - from Etang-sur-Arroux to Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne - he had just 12 seconds in hand on the bunch after being on the attack for 137km.
The sprint from the peloton was won by stage 1 winner Noah Hobbs (Great Britain), with Dunwoody just behind and taking 3rd place for his efforts.
More to come.
He’s done it!! Twice in the break in one day, then solo from the second move to hold off the peloton.
