Ryan Mullen has put his time trial legs to good use on the opening stage of the ZLM Toer in Holland, taking 14th place in the short sharp test that got the race underway yesterday.
The national TT champion and World Championships silver medalist in the U23 TT, Mullen relinquished 12 seconds to stage winner and race leader Jos Van Emden (Team LottoNl-Jumbo).
The Dutch victor clocked a time of 7:23, just three seconds ahead of American Taylor Phinney (BMC) who is now showing real signs of full recovery from his crash of two years ago in the US road race championships.

And new Swiss star Stefan Kueng, a team mate of Phinney's at BMC, was just one second further back in 3rd place.

Mullen would have liked to have finished higher up the result but appears to be making very healthy progress in his first full season at WorldTour level, with Cannondale.
The race continues today, Thursday, with the 186km stage 2 starting and finishing in Oss.
