Jack Wilson has put in a very strong showing at the Tour of Flanders today, finishing just seconds off the small group sprinting for the win.
National U23 road race champion, Jack Wilson has proven best of the Irish team in the U23 Tour of Flanders in Belgium today; the opening event in a key week for the international men.
The An Post-Chainreaction rider, competing today on the Irish team, came home in 22nd place.
He was in a group of 18 men who were 18 seconds down on the select group of 17 riders sprinting for the win, which went to Dylan Groenewegen of the Netherlands.
It was a very good performance by Wilson, albeit short of the top 10 placing that Cycling Ireland head coach Brian Nugent said he was hoping for. Such a result would have secured vital points in aiding Ireland's efforts to qualify for the U23 road race at the World Championships in Spain by September.

The Irish will have two more chances in the coming week to try and get points, with the Cote de Picardie in France on Wednesday and the ZLM Tour on next weekend in Holland. Like today's race, they are part of the U23 international Nations Cup series.
Next best of the Irish team today was Ryan Mullen in 39th place, some 1:17 down. Eoin McCarthy came home in 48th place 2:19 adrift, while Conor Dunne was 55th at 3:05.

Conor McIlwaine and Javan Nulty were both non-finishers in today's 166km race in Belgium.
Nulty said he punctured at the bottom on the Taaienberg climb where cars were not allowed to help riders back on. He was left in no man’s land and was pulled out of the race with 25km to go. At the time of writing it was unclear what had happened to McIlwaine.
