Blarney rider Robert Forrest's 3rd place on the final stage of the Newcastle West Knights Vets' Two Day in Limerick on Sunday was enough to give him the overall win.

The 60km stage 3 saw the field split, with a group of 12 arriving at the finish together to fight for stage honours.

Adamstown's Fergus Whelan used his kick to take the stage victory ahead of Dave Winship from Newcastle West CC, with race leader Forrest 3rd.

He had taken the lead after winning the opening road stage early on Saturday.

He gained 28 seconds on the peloton in a three-man move that included Tom Shanahan of Limerick CC and Carbo Oriol of Henry J Lyons.

In the 8km time trial later that day, Derek Ferguson of Kings Moss CC took victory.

He won by the significant margin of 23 seconds from stage 1 winner Forrest, with his breakaway companion from the opener Carbo in 2rd a further three seconds back.

Carbo should have been just three seconds behind race leader Forrest going into the last stage but he was penalised 30 seconds for crossing the white line several times on stage 1.

It meant ahead of Sunday's decider, Forrest had the race lead by four seconds from TT winner Moss.

Shanahan was 3rd overall, some 23 seconds behind the leader, followed by Carbo at 33 seconds.

While Shanahan did not finish the final stage, the others in the top four were all in the front group at the finish.

It meant Forrest claimed overall victory from Ferguson and Carbo respectively.
