Alice Sharpe has put in another strong ride in Belgium to
finish Omloop van de Westhoek (1.1) on a day when half the field were non
finishers.
Irish road and track international Sharpe (26) finished
in 44th, in a group 13:05 down on the winner, with huge gaps through
the race as the cobbles and climbs significantly split things up.
With seven laps of a finishing circuit to negotiate, when
the race split and groups fell behind many riders were prevented from continuing
by race officials or withdrew.
Up front, the SD Worx duo of Luxembourg champion Christine
Majerus and last week’s Danilith Nokere Koerse winner Amy Pieters rode away for
a resounding team 1-2.
They were 2:38 ahead of the chasing group, led home by Thalita
de Jong (Bingoal Casino-Chevalmeire) for the final place on the
podium.
The race, on Sunday, also featured Irish riders Imogen Cotter (Keukens Redant Cycling Team) and Lauren Creamer (Lviv Cycling Team), who were among the many non-finishers on a day when positioning was absolutely essential.
