Having won the Derby Festival Race in Kildare Town on Thursday night to take his first win of the season, Stephen Halpin was at it again in Carrick-on-Suir today taking victory in the Thomas Sheehan Memorial.
The Polygon Sweet Nice rider from Skerries in north Co Dublin jumped his breakaway companion Dermot Radford (Tipperary Wheelers) with around 500 metres remaining and stormed home for victory.
That duo spent the final lap up the road, with new national veterans’ champion Hugh Mulhearne of the promoting club (Carrick Iverk Produce) leading in the rest for third.
Today’s race was held on the same course used in the St Patrick’s Day race, which Halpin knows well having taken victory there last season.
Conor Hennebry of Carrick Iverk Produce won the A4 race.
Stephen McGrath (Fermoy CC) took the A3 event from youth rider Michael O’Loughlin (Iverk Carrick Wheelers). The latter was granted permission to ride with the seniors to prepare him for the upcoming Youth Olympics and very nearly pulled off the win today, leading out the sprint and just being pipped at the line.
We’ll have more in a bit.
