Stephen Halpin has opened his account for 2014 in the latest round of the Mondello Bikeworx Series in Co Kildare last night, Tuesday.
The Bikeworx rider got clear of the field with three laps remaining and was soon joined by team mate and winner in Mondello two weeks ago, Ciaran Kelly.
As they worked away in an effort to establish a clear lead, a number of attacks pinged off the front of the main group behind, with a three-man group pulling clear.
In that chase trio were Eugene Murtagh (Lucan CRC), Ian Richardson (UCD CC) and Kerry Group Rás Mumhan winner Mark Dowling (DID Dunboyne).
The chasers made contact with the leading Bikeworx pair after around half a lap, making five up front.
And that was to prove the winning of the race, with nobody behind getting close to the breakaway for the remainder of the race.
At the finish Kelly and Halpin worked well as a team, with flying comeback man Kelly committing himself to the service of Halpin, leading him out in the final sprint which Halpin won from Dowling.
Kelly hung in for third place on the night while Murtagh was just behind in fourth and Richardson fifth.
It was Paul Kennedy of VeloRevolution who won the bunch sprint for sixth place to round out the prizes in the second round of the series.
