Stephen Clancy finding his legs against world class field at Tour of Denmark (UCI 2.HC)

Stephen Clancy, in white, in action in Denmark today. He appears to be finding his feet against first class opposition.

Limerick's Stephen Clancy has finished a solid 86th place on today's second stage of the Tour of Denmark, coming over the line just 38 seconds behind stage winner Matti Breschel (Team Saxo-Tinkoff).

Clancy, riding for the US-based Team Novo Nordisk team in his debut pro season, finished much higher than many more established professionals and was one of his teams best performers today.

The 175 kilometre stage from Ribe to Sondenborg saw the race finish in a bunch sprint, with Britain's Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma Quick Step) finishing sixth and Garmin SHARP'S Tyler Farrar fourth.

The race itself is not known for its hills and previous winners such as David Millar and Fabian Cancellara attest to that.

It is more for the strong all-rounder, with the highest point reaching just 173 metres above sea level.

Tomorrow is the 'hilliest' stage of the race and takes in the Jutland peninsula, meaning echelons and crosswinds are likely to wreak havoc with the GC contenders. The race concludes on Sunday.

Interestingly, an Irishman has worn the yellow jersey in the event. That was Mark Scanlon, since retired, in 2003.

Scanlon was riding for Ag2R Prevoyance at the time and held the jersey for three days, won a stage, was fourth in the points classification and was the third best young rider overall. That year the event was won by Sebastien Lang.
