Stephenanie Roche and Seán Nolan are the new elite Leinster cycling champions after taking gold in the women's and men's races in Jenkinstown, Co Louth, on Sunday.

Nolan (Evo Pro Racing) won the men's title by just over two minutes from Niall Davis (Biking.ie), with David Conroy (Scott Quanta Racing) taking the bronze.

In the women's race, Roche (Scott Quanta Racing) claimed the gold medal by over five minutes from Niamh Stephens (Giant Dublin), with Doireann Killeen (Orwell Wheelers) rounding out the podium.

In the four-lap women's race, Roche went out hard and immediately opened a significant gap on Stephens and Killeen; leading by almost two minutes after the opening lap.

And once the pecking order was established the lone leader continued to tap out a relentless pace, adding to her advantage by well over a minute on each lap to round the day a convincing victor.

The men's race followed the same pattern and thought it was closer, Nolan looked like the champion from the outset; the Meath rider putting 45 seconds into eventual runner-up Davis on the opening lap.

Eventual bronze medal winner, and former national elite champion, Conroy was closer to Nolan after that opening lap, though he still gave away 26 seconds to the leader.

Nolan then continued to build his lead on each of the following laps in the seven lap event and was fastest rider of the race on each of the laps apart from the last when he eased back as he knew victory was in the bag.

Behind him, Conroy was in 2nd place for most of the race until Davis pegged him back a little on the penultimate lap before passing him on the final passage of the circuit to take the silver medal.

More to come.
