Stenson, O'Leary and O'Mahony impress on bruising JT of Wales stage

One of the most promising up and coming British juniors at the moment, Nathan Draper, has assumed control of the Junior Tour of Wales after winning the second stage of the race this evening.

The GB Olympic Development programme rider, wearing the colours of the RST Racing team this weekend, claimed the brutally hard second leg of the race which finished atop Llangynidr mountain after 73 kilometres of hard, hilly racing.

Adam Stenson (NRPT/Magnet.ie) was best of the sizeable Irish contingent in fourth, some 25 seconds back and he’s also the highest-placed Irishman on GC in 10th, 1:46 down.

Robert O’Leary was next-best of the Irish on today’s second stage and the first-year junior riding for the Munster Academy was 10th, 37 seconds down and is 26th overall over two and a half minutes back.

The big hopes from an Irish point of view are Simon Tuomey, Darragh O’Mahoney and Michael O’Loughlin, though the latter has been sick the last day or two and looks below par.

He was over three minutes back this evening and is 50th overall, 4:24 down and very much out of contention for a good GC result.

O'Mahony was strong today and managed to take maximum points on the first of the day's two climbs.

He's sixth overall on the KOM classification while his time out front - along with Alexis Roche as part of the day's break, saw the former also take some sprint points and he's fourth overall there.

There are three stages to go, starting with a crit tomorrow morning which features 11 laps of a 3-kilometre rolling circuit.

Stage four tomorrow afternoon is 86 kilometres while the longest stage is reserved for Monday and that finishes on Tumble Mountain after 89 kilometres.

It’s an absolutely crucial event for the Irish in terms of selecting the five-man national junior team for the world championships in the US next month meaning the dozen-plus Irish riders spread across the NRPT/Magnet.ie, Munster Academy and Cycling Ulster teams will all be keen to impress.
