Adam Stenson proved strongest of the breakaway in the combined A3 and junior race at Rás Naomh Finian in Co Meath this afternoon.

The NRPT-Magnet.ie man saw off the challenge of Seamus Sinnott (Wexford Wheelers) and Derek Byrne (Laois CC).

With a 74km out and back course to be negotiated, a five-man move broke clear of the large field on the outward route from the start at Mother Hubbard’s to the turning point at Kilbeggan.

In that move along with the eventual podium finishers were the evergreen veteran Sean Bracken of Usher Irish Road Club and Martin McNamara of Lucan CRC.

They set about their task well with the breeze against them on the way out and by the turn had 1:30 in hand and were looking good for survival.

However, the bunch behind was far from finished and staged and good comeback on the fast run for home in Clonard.

In the end though the breakaway simply had too much in hand and maintained a lead of around 30 seconds by the finish where young Stenson made not mistake.

He has not long returned from a training camp in Spain with the first national junior selection of the year and was clearly showing the benefit of that warm weather stint today.

He was also to the fore in the miserable conditions at the Cycleways Cup in Navan last Sunday, coming home at the head of affairs with team mate Aaron Swan to share victory.

Today, former national junior road race champion Liam Corcoran (Castlebar CC) took the bunch sprint for 6th place while Stenson claimed the climbers’ prize.

In the A4 race, Jerry Ryan from Upperchurch got the verdict in the dash to the line, just about seeing off Ronan O'Flynn (Galway Bay) in what was a close run thing.

William Byrne (Usher Irish Road Club) rounded out the podium on the day.
