This weekend's Dornan Rás Mumhan looks set to be a fantastic showdown - a savage weekend for the riders involved - as a top field has been assembled of the best of the Irish lining up alongside some very strong British teams.
There are 150 riders on the start list and though that is a little smaller than last year, this is a field that is very deep in quality. We have a very strong Irish national junior team, a couple of whom may be deep in the race to win overall, going up against powerful Cycling Ulster and Cycling Leinster selections.
Added to that, Trinity Racing - with last year's nearly man Dean Harvey - has also sent a strong team as has Caldwell Cycles, All human-VeloRevolution led by Daire Feeley, Foran CT, Spirt TBW Stuart Hall Cycling and a Team Skyline-Cadence that includes Conn McDunphy, Paul Kennedy and Cian Keogh.
Kevin McCambridge is in the Inspired Cycling selection while Luke Smith is part of the Moynalty Cycling Club team, the in-form Liam Crowley lines out for UCD Cycling Club and Patrick O'Loughlin is part of the Greenmount Cycling Academy team.
The racing gets underway today, Good Friday, from 12 noon with an 8.8km TTT stage 1a from Currow Village. There is a 70km road stage, 1b, this afternoon from Castleisland to Knocknagoshel via Brosna. It includes five laps of a circuit, with a small climb, before an 600m uphill to the line in Knocknagoshel.
Tomorrow's stage 2 is 114km of racing from Killarney to Sneem with 1,140m of elevation gain including the cat 1 Ballaghisheen Pass - some 6km in length from base to peak and starting 33km into the stage. The 4km cat 2 Coomakista comes later, and is peaked some 44km from the finish.
Easter Sunday's stage 3 is 115km with 1,700m of elevation gain, taking the riders from Millstreet to the uphill finish on Kerryman’s Table. That climb provided a fantastic stage finish last year. This is the queen stage of the race and the field will be split before the final climb, where the cream will rise to the top.
The final stage on Monday sees the riders tackle 113km, starting and finishing in Killorglin. The riders will race around the 24km loop through Beaufort three times before 10 laps of the Donal McKenna circuit around Killorglin to add a further 41km.
