Spectator's footage captures Roglič's heavy crash in Basque Country | Video

Primož Roglič shows the scars of his crash, with his hip the main area of concern though he has extensive road rash and needs further tests

Primož Roglič (Bora-hansgrohe) may have retained the race lead at Itzulia Basque Country (2.UWT) today by the Slovenian suffered a very heavy crash, hitting a high kerb after sliding across the road at speed.

This spectator's video - below - captured the moment the stage 1 TT winner fell, on a sweeping right hander. Roglič appears to be the first faller and it looks like he simply slid out on the corner, across the tarmac and against the roadside kerb, with others also crashing hard.

He remounted, but only after undergoing a concussion protocol at the roadside, with the rips to his kit, and hip, evidence of the incident.

The peloton knocked off the speed and waited for him, allowing Roglič get back into the bunch just before the final climb commenced.

Luckily for the 34-year-old, the finale came down to a sprint from a bunch - won by Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck) from Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain-Victorious) and Alex Aranburu (Movistar Team).

Roglič placed 19th on the stage but a statement from his team said he was due to undergo further medical checks.

"Initial examinations indicate that Primož Roglič suffered superficial wounds on his right side, contusions and bruising," Bora-hansgrohe said in a brief statement. "A roadside assessment excluded concussion. A follow-up examination will be done at the hotel soon."
