Eli Iserbyt has made the headlines for the wrong reasons in recent weeks but today at Koppenbergcross the Belgian national champion was the victim of a nasty incident when beer was thrown over him.
A spectator could later be seen being led away by the police, with Iserbyt's team, Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal, said it planned to make a formal complaint.
“It’s very simple. This is crappy,” said Jurgen Mettepenningen, Iserbyt's team manager. “People like that should stay at home. This has no place in cyclocross, cyclocross is a beautiful sport.
"I also think the people who react at home behind their keyboards are stupid. Support someone, but not against someone.”
Iserbyt added the incident was unpleasant, adding he could taste it for a moment but they just tried to carry on with his race.
“It is good that the police were able to take the man away immediately,” he said. “It did not have a big impact on my race, but I still had to recover for a moment.”
