Luke Smith (Moynalty CC) has taken another victory at the Mondello Series, beating the All human-VeloRevolution duo of Mark Dowling and Daire Feeley into 2nd and 3rd places this evening in Co Kildare.
Smith claimed the victory this evening after winning the Madigan GP in Antrim on Saturday, adding to a series of victories in recent weeks after hitting a purple patch of form.
After going off in the A1 scratch group - in what was the ninth round of the Usher Irish Road Club’s Mondello Series - those scratch riders made short work of the gaps to the A2, A3 and A4 groups ahead.
The catch was made relatively early and soon after a strong five-man breakaway got clear. Smith was in that move with Dowling – who won the Collins Christle Memorial, Kilmessan, Co Meath, on Sunday – and Rás Tailteann champion Feeley.
That very strong trio had Mark Pinfield (Blarney Cycling Club) for company was well as Ruairi Byrne, the Orwell Wheelers junior riding very well again against the big name elite riders.
That group pulled out a gap on the bunch and with about 15 minutes of racing remaining it was Smith who took the initiative up front. He put in a dig, with Dowling responding and that duo riding away from Feeley, Pinfield and young Byrne.
However, while Smith and Dowling were away and headed for the finish line, Feeley then attacked from the chasing group. He got clear and began to make his way across to the two leaders. Dowling saw he was coming, which forced Smith to take on the work in a bid to keep Feeley at bay.
On the final lap, with Feeley still not across to the two leaders, Smith managed to grab enough recovery to get set for the two-up sprint, before beating Dowling to the line.
Feeley then finished in 3rd, with Pinfield getting the better of Byrne for 4th place. Ronan Killeen (Lucan Cycling Road Club) was best of the rest in 6th with Carthach McCarthy (Blarney Cycling Club) best woman.
