Ireland’s Siobhan Horgan (GSD Gestion) has said she was happy with her ride in La Flèche Wallonne Féminine on Wednesday but voiced her frustration after she only barely missed joining the lead group of riders going over the top of the Mur du Huy.

She said on the first time up the climb, as the lead group was going clear, she was in a small group just off the back of the leaders. However, none of the riders she was with made it across despite being within touching distance of the breakaway.

“I got badly placed first time into the Mur and I just about missed the front group,” she said.

“I was in a group of eight riders less than ten metres off the back and at that stage I was certain we’d get back to them. But the attacks were on up the front and we just didn’t make it. After that we kind of sat up and a big group got onto us.”

The Cork rider echoed the sentiments of Dan Martin, who was sixth in the men’s race, saying she was really struck by the level of Irish support on the route; which was 123km for the women.

“There was loads of Irish around the course; it was great to see them,” said Horgan.

She eventually ended up 42nd, coming home just over five minutes after American rider Evelyn Stevens (Team Specialized) got the better of Marianne Vos (Stichting Rabo) up the Mur for the second time to take her first World Cup victory ahead of the defending champion.
