Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) has put in the TT ride of his life to win today's stage 2 at Giro d'Italia. It was only the second TT victory of his career and his first in a Grand Tour, underlining his peak condition at present.
Yates went around the 9.2km TT in Budapest in 11:50 and was giddy in his post-stage interview as his victory seemed to come as a surprise. He was just three seconds up on yesterday's stage winner Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Fenix), which ensured the Dutchman retains the races lead.
Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo Visma) took 3rd place, just five seconds down. That ride underlines is status as a dark horse to contend for the general classification, with the Dutch rider expressing his disappointment after the stage, saying he denied himself the chance to win by blowing up late in the test, which featured a 1.3km uphill finish.
Italian champion, and team mate of Simon Yates, Matteo Sobrero claimed 4th place today, just 13 seconds of his team leader. Ben Tulett, the 20-year-old making his Grand Tour debut with Ineos Grenadiers, put in a brilliant ride for 5th place, also at 13 seconds.
