Shay Elliott Classic headlines weekend of road racing across Ireland

The Trinity Skoda Shay Elliott Memorial, one of the most prestigious races in the country and with €500 for the winner, headlines road racing action this weekend in Ireland, though there are also other races that catch the eye.

Week day racing has also begun, and is building up speed, with several events being promoted in the middle of next weekend. But first, to this weekend's action, and there are two promotions being held on Saturday.

West Clare Cycling Club is holding its annual Crotty-Cotter Cup promotion, with three races being run, on a circuit from the start in Kilrush; C1 Crotty Cup (3 laps 132km), C2 West Clare Cup (2 laps 88km) and C3 Cotter Cup (2 laps 88km).

Sign on is from from 10am to 11:30am and racing starts at 12 noon from race HQ at Kilrush Community School Kilrush. You can get more information and enter the races by following this link.

Also on Saturday, the Groucho's GP is being held, by promoting club Orchard CC. The club has decided to run two races; one for C2s and one for C3s. There is no event for C1s.

To be clear, Orchard had decided to run the events as one handicapped race, but it has now reverted back to a two-race programme.

On Sunday, Bray Wheelers holds its Shay Elliott Memorial and Ken Duff Memorial events in Co Wicklow; always a big day out and always very challenging races.

The Shay Elliott will be four laps, of 24km each, with the finish atop the Shay Elliott climb, for a total race distance of 124km. The Ken Duff will be two laps, of 24km each, totaling 76km.

The start is from race HQ at Laragh GAA, Co Wicklow, and the events begin from 10am. You can get more information and enter the races by following this link.

Also on Sunday, Dungarvan Cycling Club is holding a one-day, two-stage, race for youth riders; the DCC Youth Stage Race. It includes an early morning TT followed by a road race later in the day and there are events for U12s, U14s and U16s.

Next Tuesday, May 13th, the Appleby Orwell Women's Beginner League 2025 is on again at Corkagh Park, Dublin. You can get more information and enter by following this link.

And next Thursday evening in Antrim Round 1 of the Ernie Magwood Super Six 2025 will be held, by Island Wheelers. The 10m TT starts at 7pm from Crankill Rd, Glarryford, Ballymena.
