National road race champion Damien Shaw added to his already impressive palmares today with a superb solo victory in the John Beggs Memorial, promoted by Banbridge CC.
The Team ASEA man was part of a five-man break that got away early on and they were never seen again before the finish.
In the move were runner-up Connor McConvey (Team 3M), Mark Dowling (DID Dunboyne), Bryan McCrystal (Team ASEA) and Sean McKenna (Aquablue); a move that must rank as one of the best quality breakaways of the season.
Shaw and McConvey attacked with a couple of laps to go and they pulled out a gap of about 45 seconds on the three behind.
Dowling made a brave bid to bridge to the two men up front and trimmed the deficit to around 25 seconds, though that was in part due to the two up front starting to look at each other.
Shaw sensed the danger of Dowling bridging and attacked on the last lap, going clear of McConvey who hung on for second.
McConvey did have the consolation of claiming the prize as winner of the KOH competition which was awarded to the rider with the highest tally of points from the five primes.
The race was the penultimate round of the National Series where Bryan McCrystal (Team ASEA) leads the way from Dowling.
