Having worked his way into a breakaway on stage 3 of the Etoile de Bességes stage race in France on Friday, Damien Shaw ended his debut event with An Post-ChainReaction with a solid time trial ride on Sunday.
Having ridden very few TTs as an amateur before making the jump to Continental level by joining his new team during the off season, Shaw came home in 54th place in the race against the clock.
He relinquished 1:36 to stage and overall winner Jérôme Coppel (IAM Cycling) over the 11.9km course in Alés.
That left the Mullingar man in 86th place overall, 6:18 down.
He will be pleased to have his first race, not to mention quality mileage and experience, under his belt with his breakaway ride a great confidence booster.
Similarly, Connor McConvey looked very strong throughout the race and can look forward with confidence to the challenges to come.
That includes trying to win the Rás where he has excelled on general classification in the past.
McConvey finished in 94th place and 2:10 down in Sunday’s TT at Etoile de Bességes and rounded out the general classification in 69th, some 5:30 in arrears.
